Fall Online Painting Workshops

Pete Hocking, This is the Murmur of Yearning, 356 x 36 inches, oil on panel

This fall I’m offering a series of four online painting workshops. The workshops are conducted via Zoom. All worships include group sessions and one-to-one meetings with me. In addition to the meetings, I’ll also provide resources to be used at the convenience of the participants. Fuller descriptions of each workshop are listed below, but the titles and dates are:

  • Two Sections of Advancing Practice: A Painting Tutorial (12 weeks) — Tuesdays, October 10 – December 19 & Wednesdays, October 11 – December 20th
  • The Infinity of Nature: Landscape Painting & More (1 week) — October 14 – 21 2023
  • Inside/Outside: Painting Between Worlds (1 week)— 11- 18 November
  • Queer Painters Look At The World (1 week) — RESCHEDULED TO WINTER 2024

Participants don’t need to have a studio, but should have a workspace that has internet or data access for a Zoom video conference. These are primarily painting workshops, but they’re are open to artists of all skill levels who are interested in oil painting, acrylic painting, drawing, watercolor, collage, photography or multimedia approaches.

REGISTRATION: Workshop fees are listed with the descriptions. You can register by either sending me a Venmo payment to @Peter-Hocking-artist (last four digits are 7248) or a check to Peter Hocking, PO Box 672, Truro MA 02666. Please note the workshop title with your payment. Please email me — phocking@gmail.com — when you send your payment so I can put you on the registration list. Once you’ve registered, I’ll send a confirmation email. A few days prior to the workshop, I’ll send a Zoom link and workshop resources. Email me with questions — phocking@gmail.com.

Week-Long Workshops: The first Saturday of each workshop is focused on learning from several artists who are working in dialogue with the workshop’s theme. Using prompts drawn from these artists’ work (or alternatively pursuing our own projects), we’ll engage their thinking in our picture making. During the week, participants will be encouraged to continue working on their own (as time allows) and everyone will schedule an individual consultation with the instructor. The following Saturday is focused on additional consideration of artists relevant to the workshop theme, continued studio work, and a final group review of the week’s work. One-to-one sessions are tailored to each participant’s individual questions and needs.

October 14 – 21 2023THE INFINITY OF NATURE: LANDSCAPE PAINTING & MORE:  David Hockney once said his subject is the infinite variety of nature. While speaking of the landscape, Hockney was speaking beyond it too — to include the figure as well as human ecology. In my experience, strong painting grows from one’s engagement with the world through fieldwork research, active memory, a full range of sensory experience, and great note taking. This workshop will meet via Zoom two consecutive Saturdays 11 AM – 5 PM ET, and participants will also schedule a one-to-one meeting with the instructor within two weeks of the workshop. Fee: $250

11- 18 November INSIDE/OUTSIDE: PAINTING BETWEEN WORLDS: Liminal spaces are places of transition, places in-between, places where one reality intersects with another. This workshop will explore paintings that include interiors and exteriors. — of the physical, psychological and political kind. This workshop will meet via Zoom two consecutive Saturdays 11 AM – 5 PM ET, and participants will also schedule a one-to-one meeting with the instructor within two weeks of the workshop. Fee: $250

RESCHEDULED TO WINTER 2024– QUEER PAINTERS LOOK AT THE WORLD: Lived experience and identity provide distinct lenses through which one sees the world and offer opportunity to look beyond the obvious, orthodox, and everyday. This workshop will explore how contemporary LGBQTIA+ painters are interrogating, revealing, and exploring contemporary life — while inviting participants to consider how they might make paintings that ‘queer’ obvious points of view. This workshop will meet via Zoom two consecutive Saturdays 11 AM – 5 PM ET, and participants will also schedule a one-to-one meeting with the instructor within two weeks of the workshop. Cost: $250
