IN-PERSON WORKSHOPS

Provincetown Art Association & Museum

Visual Research and Painting from Source Material with Pete Hocking

September 17-20 |  10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Painters draw inspiration from sources, be it observation, experience, dreams, imagination, objects, writing, photographs, illustration, film/video mirrors, drawings, or other manifestations of visual culture.

Approaching painting as a subjective art form, this workshop will consider ways artists navigate visual culture, undertake visual research, and transform source material (as opposed to simply reproducing it) into original artworks. We’ll explore the process of keeping visual journals, archives of source material, and creating plans for studio practice. Participants will be encouraged to use photographic references, drawings, still-life setups, mirror, etc. in the creation of artworks during the four days of the workshop.

Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown — June 17th – June 21st 2024

The Infinity of Nature: David Hockney once said his subject is the infinite variety of nature. While speaking of the landscape, Hockney was speaking beyond it too — to include the figure as well as human ecology. In my experience, strong painting grows from one’s engagement with the world through fieldwork research, active memory, a full range of sensory experience, and great note taking. Direct, spontaneous picture making allows a painter to capture something ephemeral and unexpected, and slower work in the studio – often developed from reference material –provides space for considered composition. We’ll consider both strategies in this workshop. Workshop participants are invited to work with still life, self-portraiture, landscape, or abstraction with the goal of discovering ineffable qualities in their paintings. Participants are encouraged to bring source material and experiences of interest. This workshop is designed to meet the needs of learners at all levels. Students working with any painting media — including oil, acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and pastel — are welcome. Group sessions will focus on broad questions and looking at artwork and the instructor will work one-to-one with workshop participants everyday.

Registration Begins January 24th. As of 26 January this workshop is full. You can join the waitlist.

Truro Center for the Arts/Castle Hill — July 29th – August 4th 2024

Drawing As Painting/Painting As Drawing: In the Western art tradition, drawing has long been seen as subordinate to painting — something to be learned before picking up the paintbrush. But in contemporary practice, there’s an exciting synergy between the possibilities of the drawn mark and the richness of painted passages of color. This workshop will focus on the intersection between drawing and painting — considering the work of contemporary painters who blur the line between drawing and painting and by using a variety of media we’ll create fresh works that incorporate the energy of drawing and the vibrancy of painting. The goal is to create a body of exploratory work that can refresh and revitalize our at-home studio practice. We’ll work from the landscape, engage with self-portraiture, still life, and work from reference photos. The workshop is open to artists of all levels.
